"Ask the East Side Gang"
Friday, 5/12/06

Thanks to Steve Barcak from Pontiac Heaven for the next question. He asks " Why did we get away from the Mopar bodies?" If you remember we have used the Dodge for some 10 years, set it on fire three times and blew off the chassis in Las Vegas. Needless to say that "dude" was tired. We had picked up a 125 "murf" chassis from some friends and were going to stretch a '76 Ford Mustang II to fit, but decided not to ruin the look of the car and found a Steve Leach Buick Starfire here locally. Now remember, the nostalgia body business was yet to take off as it has now.

The Buick, or Monza, was fitted and re-tinned by Nate and Ray and almost ready for the March meet in '05. We were bolting it together going to the line. The new chassis and rule changes created more than a little stress for the year; our best finish was runner-up to Pettit at Pomona. By the way we are still struggling with the new chassis. If you saw the Pomona results from last week you'll notice that it was the quickest field ever, with a 6.31 bump spot. Nate and I started with Good Guys and the funny car in '95; the nostalgia nitro class is just in the beginning of its third year. Four years ago we did an exhibition for Good Guys with only four cars.

Ok back to the question asked. So that's why the move to a GM product. However, we take delivery of a "cuda" body this weekend and will begin preparation for the change, yep we're Mopar people. What happened to the Dodge, well the good news is it will return to racing as a Nostalgia One/Pro-comp car with a blown KB on alcohol in '07.

Oh, what happened to the Ford Mustang II? Well I can tell you it is one of the prettiest blue Nostalgia Funny Cars around, and it "Hauls" auto parts in the five second range.

Steve thanks for the question, hope things are well with you and your hot rod.

Keep the questions coming…
